TIM WAS A VISIONARY, A REAL WORKER-INTELLECTUAL, AND VERY HUMAN

Posted by Jeremy Brecher

December 16, 2009

Although I knew Tim from my work at the Chinese Progressive Association, from the Campaign on Contingent Work, and from his global solidarity work, I saw the news of Tim’s death in the King Open School list-serve, since our daughters attend the same elementary school.

I am shocked and saddened by Tim’s death. He was truly a visionary who believed in global solidarity and who was able to introduce new ideas to people in a very concrete way. Just downstairs from his office when he was at 33 Harrison, we at CPA relied on his advice on a number of occasions.

Although I did not see him often in recent years, I would run into him in Chinatown or in Cambridge at our daughters’ school. We would always stop to chat, because he was one of the most friendly, open, and human activists I know, who had an equal appreciation of daily family life and of major global questions.

I would like to be like Tim if I ever “grow up.”

ABOUT JEREMY BRECHER

11You and I may not know each other, but I suspect there are some problems that we share -- problems like climate change, war, and injustice. For half a century I have been participating in and writing about social movements that address those problems. The purpose of this website is to share what I've learned. I hope it provides something of use to you in addressing our common problems.

For the record, I am the author of more than a dozen books on labor and social movements. I have written and/or produced more than twenty video documentaries. I have participated in movements for nuclear disarmament, civil rights, peace in Vietnam, international labor rights, global economic justice, accountability for war crimes, climate protection, and many others.
